Where to Workout in Red Deer: Move Garuda

If you’re anything like me, you’ve probably never heard of Garuda before but I was excited to check out this beautiful boutique studio and learn what it was all about. And yes, I’m still finding new places to workout in this city. It’s crazy right?

About Move Garuda

What is Move Garuda all about? Let’s just get into what exactly Garuda is. I’m going to be honest here, and say that I don’t yet understand the difference between Pilates and Garuda. Simply put, Garuda is an extension of Pilates.

“Pilates builds strength, flexibility and lean muscle with an emphasis on lengthening the body and aligning the spine. It focuses on core stability, including pelvic and shoulder girdle stabilization, neutral alignment and breathing. Imagine combining the best elements of yoga, pilates, martial arts and dance into one practice. Garuda is the fusion of various practices allowing the participant to explore form, breath, fluidity and dynamic movement.”

Garuda uses a specially designed apparatus, similar to Pilates, which looks intimidating but can actually be a lot of fun to use once you get the hang of the movements. It’s great for all ages, levels, and abilities and is especially great for rehabilitation on injuries. Not just for women, Garuda is becoming popular with athletes as it helps them develop muscles they wouldn’t normally work at the gym.

Move Garuda is located in the hip part of town, Capstone/Riverlands and is an absolutely stunning little studio. They are the definition of a boutique studio, running only one class at a time with limited space available.

Because the studio is so specialized and classes are so small, there are no big change rooms and showers here. There is a bathroom to change and freshen up in if needed and a small coat/boot rack to stash your outwear.

About the Classes

Move Garuda offers a handful of different classes, whether you’re looking for a private, semi-private or small group setting. Beside Garuda Apparatus, you can also try out various styles of Pilates, Barre, and Pilates/Barre combo classes. What’s great is that they are always taking their feedback and adapting their schedules to meet your requests.

What’s interesting about these classes is that you’re not going to work up a huge sweat like you would elsewhere but you’re still going to feel the burn and get an amazing workout. It’s recommended to bring water, wear mid to long fitted pants and grip socks which are available to purchase at the studio if you don’t have your own collection.

What I Loved Most

If you’ve been following this series for awhile, you’ll know I’m a sucker for pretty studios and this one definitely fits the bill. But what I truly loved was that owner/instructor Amanda was so friendly and personable on top of being a wealth of knowledge. It felt like working out with a friend. The Garuda Apparatus might have been my favourite part and I’m excited to get back and try it out again.

Where to Workout in Red Deer: Breeze Yoga

Where To Workout in Red Deer

I’m back with another yoga studio to share this week, Breeze Yoga Red Deer. So many people have been surprised at the selection of places available in this city as I continue to feature more and more places month after month. It just goes to show that there is truly a place for everyone out there.

Breeze Yoga Red Deer

About Breeze Yoga Red Deer

Breeze Yoga has studios in both Red Deer and Sylvan Lake. They are a community based, family-centric studio offering child-minding and family classes. Their space is beautiful, clean and welcoming and the staff goes out of their way to make you feel comfortable. Their space is stocked with tea, plus a ton amenities in the change rooms. They’ve even got your back should you forget your mat, at no cost. There is a small retail area with items for all your yoga needs as well.

When I say this studio is family-centric, I mean it. They offer child minding, family classes, and specialized children’s classes. They also host birthday parties with yoga, crafts, and games for the littles.

About the Classes

From Hatha to kids yoga, acro to sleepy time aerial, prenatal to yoga for anxiety, there’s something for all walks of life. Classes are accessible to all ages and abilities. Breeze differentiates from other yoga studios offering specialized classes such as aerial yoga (Hatha aerial and sleep time aerial), couples classes, acro, and even a Christian based flow. For moms and babies or kids, there is pre-natal yoga, mom, and baby, mom and tot, family yoga and yoga for different age groups.

Some really cool classes to try are both the Sleepy Time Aerial and Yoga for Emotional Balance as a great way to unwind yourself.

What I Loved Most

While I have my home studio already, I really liked that Breeze Yoga offers some different classes. The aerial yoga classes are such a fun change up from regular mat classes but what I really enjoyed was the Yoga for Emotional Balance class. For me, it was much needed and I would probably never take the time to try a regular Restorative or Yoga Nidra class at my regular studio because I’m usually looking for more of a workout.

Where to Workout in Red Deer: Weber Studio

Where to Workout in Red Deer

I know what you’re thinking, why are you talking about a physiotherapy clinic in a fitness review series? Well, friends, this amazing little clinic studio is home to one of the first Russian trained kettlebell instructors in Canada so it makes sense that his physiotherapy practice would extend to incorporate fitness classes as well. I was able to pop in for one of their regular kettlebell classes for an all over butt-kicking.

Weber Physio Studio

About Weber Physio

April and Keith Weber were both born and raised in Central Alberta. Both with active backgrounds, their journeys led them both on the path of physiotherapy and the opening of their own clinic together. Keith Weber was one of the first in Canada to be trained in Russian kettlebells. You could say he’s the Canadian OG kettlebell guy. On top of owning a successful physiotherapy clinic, Keith has developed a successful kettlebell program used by the likes of Joe Rogan. If you’re looking for the best of the best in kettlebells, this is probably where you want to go.

About the Classes

Classes offered in the studio include kettlebells, women’s kettlebell crosstraining, kettlebell/yoga mixer, and physio yoga. The prerequisite to any kettlebell classes at Weber Studio is the Introductory Kettlebell Seminar. This seminar goes over all of the basic kettlebell movements and their proper forms, giving you the tools you need in regular kettlebell classes.

The prerequisite to any kettlebell classes at Weber Studio is the Introductory Kettlebell Seminar. This seminar goes over all of the basic kettlebell movements and proper form, giving you the tools you need in regular kettlebell classes. The kettlebell class didn’t offer a ton of one on one support, although that may have been because the class I was in were experienced regulars.

The neat thing about the classes is that they are designed to help prevent common problems found in patients needing physiotherapy. Crosstraining for women helps promote strength and prevent osteoporosis. Physio Yoga takes a rehabilitative approach to yoga. All classes are designed for everyone, whether you’re a patient of the physio clinic or not.

Drop-in – $10-15 depending on the class

Unlimited Monthly Pass – $90

What I Loved Most

These classes are designed to have a minimal negative impact on your body, it’s a physiotherapy clinic after all, but that doesn’t mean you won’t get your butt kicked. I was done after the warm-up and there was still 45 minutes of kettlebell work to be had. It was a sweaty good time, and I felt like I got to be a part of their little workout family while I was there.
